Free Family Discovery Day (Reptiles & Amphibians)

Saturday 5th September 2015 at Elsecar Heritage Centre (10-3pm)

Join local specialist John Newton to learn more about the reptiles and amphibians of the Dearne Valley and about their exciting way of life!

  • Live exhibits of local reptiles and amphibians, along with themed talks about their lifestyle, with question and answer sessions
  • Places they are likely to live in the local area
  • Problems due to habitat loss
  • How you can get involved in their conservation


Drop in sessions, talks and exhibits throughout the day 10-3pm, suitable for all ages and abilities. Come along to the visitors centre where you will be directed to the event.

REPTILE SURVEY & ID with John Newton

Sat 12th Sept 2015 (10-3pm) at Elsecar Heritage Centre (FREE)

Reptile specialist John Newton will be back the following weekend to deliver a training workshop in reptile survey and identification for beginners.This will focus on reptile ecology and ID, as well as survey technique for recording reptiles in the field.

  • Reptile identification – live animals
  • Reptile habitat types in the Dearne Valley
  • Reptile survey techniques, time of year, season and time of day
  • Survey and recording protocols
  • Survey programme, site-by-site
